Interview with Jaap Steeman, vice president of Magnetic Nail Design: the story of a successful collaboration with Omas Tecnosistemi, now part of IMA Group.

  1. Jaap, can you tell us how Magnetic Nail Design started and what the company’s first steps were?

Magnetic Nail Design was born from the passion of my wife, Mey Liang, who initially worked as a nail technician. Soon, she was asked to teach the art of creating artificial nails, and to do so, she needed specific products. This led her to import American brands. When I met her, she was already considering developing her own brand. Thanks to her knowledge of raw material suppliers, she was able to create her first products. I joined her business, bringing my experience as an economist to optimize processes and support the company’s growth.

  1. How did you come across Omas Tecnosistemi, and what prompted you to collaborate with them?

About 20 years ago, as our position in the artificial nail market was growing, we realized we needed to automate our filling processes to improve efficiency. In 2004, I attended a packaging trade show in Paris, searching for a solution. At the Omas booth, Carlo Curci, Omas Sales Director, introduced me to their pumps and a monobloc system for filling. Although our budget was tight, Carlo convinced me with his vision and the potential of their solutions, marking the beginning of our partnership.

  1. What were the key milestones in your collaboration with Omas?

Several key moments stand out:

  • 2015: We tested our first machine at Omas. Despite initial challenges with the monobloc system for nail lacquer, we worked together to develop a solution involving interchangeable pumps and a conveyor belt system. This was the start of a long-lasting partnership.
  • Development of new machines: As demand grew, we integrated more advanced systems to fill and seal jars and bottles. This included a fully automated bottle filling machine with temperature control, enhancing both efficiency and product quality.
  • Technical innovations: Omas developed custom solutions to address specific challenges, such as managing high-shear products and highly viscous gels. Their innovative systems revolutionized our production process.
  1. How has this collaboration influenced the growth of Magnetic Nail Design and Omas?

The partnership has driven growth for both companies:

  • For Magnetic Nail Design: We’ve increased productivity, optimized processes, and maintained a high standard of quality. Omas’ solutions have enabled us to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving market, develop new products, and expand our portfolio.
  • For Omas: Our challenges have stimulated their innovation, leading them to develop groundbreaking technical solutions. This has strengthened their reputation as a reliable and innovative partner.

  1. Have there been challenges, and how did you overcome them?

Challenges were inevitable, such as the initial failure of the monobloc system. However, every obstacle became an opportunity for innovation. Open dialogue with Omas team was crucial. Their adaptability and commitment to developing tailored solutions have always made a difference.

  1. What role has maintenance played in this long-term relationship?

Maintenance has been pivotal. We have a rigorous approach, with scheduled interventions every year alongside Omas technicians. This has kept our machines in excellent condition for years. Recently, an Omas technician even remarked on how well-maintained our machines are, even after decades of use. This was a true compliment and a testimony to the strength of our partnership.

  1. How would you describe the partnership between Magnetic Nail Design and Omas today?

It’s a solid and innovative collaboration. Omas is more than just a machine supplier; they are a strategic partner. Together, we’ve developed custom solutions that meet our needs and anticipate market trends. Their commitment to listening and innovation has been instrumental in our success.

  1. What’s next for this collaboration?

We’re constantly developing new products and processes. We look forward to working with Omas to integrate further automation and innovative solutions, enhancing efficiency and addressing the demands of an increasingly sophisticated market.

Thank you, Jaap, for sharing this incredible success story. We wish you and your team at Magnetic Nail Design continued growth and new milestones. We are proud to have been by your side on this journey and look forward to continuing our collaboration, innovating together, and overcoming every challenge as partners.
