CRS 2024 Annual Meeting and Expo • 8-12 July 2024

IMA Active is pleased to take part in the CRS 2024 Annual Meeting and Expo, which will be held in Bologna (Italy) on July 8-12, 2024.

CRS is a non-profit organization established to promote experts dedicated to the delivery of activities, including delivery scientists, engineers, clinicians, and technical professionals and the science of controlled release. CRS members are creating the future of delivery science and technology through fundamental delivery research, development, regulatory science, and clinical translation. Research published in CRS journals and presented during the Annual Meeting & Exposition offer a breadth of scientific knowledge.

This year the conference theme is “Integrating Delivery Science across disciplines”, building on the notion that our daily activities rely on the continuous integration of multiple knowledge domains and expertise, from pharmaceutical sciences to engineering, from biotechnology to materials science and chemistry, from molecular imaging to clinical translation, with the ultimate objective of benefiting patients and their families.

IMA Active and BASF will present a poster on “Leveraging drum filling flexibility to scale up a film-coating process” (Poster n° P 450).

Aim of this work is to investigate the possibility of managing an up-scaling process using the same drum/equipment set-up for both small- and large- scale batches. An innovative approach is proposed to process different batch sizes in the same pan. With a successful implementation, pilot-scale equipment would not be mandatory for a scale-up procedure, addressing a pressing need of many pharmaceutical companies not having both installations. The prediction of the up-scaling procedure required the evaluation of the amount of film-coating dispersion that could be applied onto a single core when it passes the spray pattern. Putting the spray rate into relation to the respective drying capacity (inlet-air quantity), general process settings could be defined for the formulation. Keeping these settings constant throughout the up-scaling process led to the same product quality independent of batch size.
