the Lab

OPENLAB is the place to share.

OpenLab is the IMA Group’s network of technological laboratories and testing area, dedicated to the research on sustainable materials, technologies and production optimization processes.

Thanks to the implementation of the most modern digital infrastructures, together with think tank spaces, environments dedicated to the generation of ideas and the prototyping of materials, we aim to build a connection between knowledge and skills coming from machines, packaging manufacturing and customers.

OpenLab analyzes most of the new sustainable and innovative materials as new compostable, biodegradable, paper-based or ultra-thin film, before they are commercially available in order to run them on vertical and horizontal packaging lines.

Thanks to OpenLab, we are able to design turnkey solutions that perfectly match the sealing and flow characteristics of the chosen film. The offer also includes in-depth tests on new materials, from laboratory analysis to production tests that simulate real life conditions, avoiding downtime and costly errors.

OPENLAB has the objective of create partnerships, finding new sustainable materials, sharing competences and creating synergy with packaging manufacturers and customers

A new way to accompany and guide our partners towards the materials evolution.

The Lab aim to maximize equipment efficiency, reduce waste whilst maintaining pack presentation and seal integrity, testing in advance new and more sustainable packaging materials.

The Team

Our team of experts has specific background in packaging materials, machines and processes.
A trained staff is constantly dedicated to the Lab activities, to support proofs and tests. Our staff can help customers to try new materials directly on the machines available in the different Labs and is constantly at disposal.

OpenLab experts will evaluate and study the technical anomalies that prevent the correct use of your film on the packaging machine. Whether it is a different film composition or a mechanical failure, our team will analyze both the material and the machine to diagnose the problem and restore the best performance.

Operational Sites

OPENLAB is located in 4 main operational sites. Connected. Advanced.
To support different needs and customers.

OpenLab Bologna (IT)

100 m2 surface Lab entirely dedicated to research and testing in Bologna.

The lab is built with state-of-the-art green building materials and incorporates the latest digital infrastructure.

The lab is divided into a think tank space dedicated to the generation of new ideas and the prototyping of new materials, and a test area to study and analyzes over 1000 samples every year.

OpenLab Lugano (CH)

400 m2 surface of Lab and test area with different horizontal form fill seal machines (rotative, Long Dwell, D-Cam, Box motion ecc) always available for tests:

  • Internal: prototipation, R&D, technological innovation;
  • Clients: tests on new materials or new up-grades;
  • Packaging producers: processability tests on new packs before entering the market.

OpenLab Arezzo (IT)

50 m2 Cold Room Area-Test
(min. temperature 0°C-product continuous feed)

200 m2 Area test with vertical form fill seal lines available for internal or client tests.
