Smart Factory • Connected Enterprise

In the Smart Factory, users' daily operations are integrated with cyber-physical systems connected to Internet networks. The goal is the digitalization of the production chain to obtain a superior quality final product.

The Smart Factory is that environment in which each instrument or system acquires its own identity in the digital world through self-identification. Tools and methods specialize in processing large amounts of data with the aim of bringing out hidden information to make quick and effective decisions.

The automated systems, equipped with AI technology, are developed and enriched: they see, learn and adapt to the environment, guaranteeing superior quality control and interacting with the work of the operators.

With the implementation of digital infrastructures, new wearable devices are created, a new human-machine interfaces to support operational activities that allow information to be conveyed in visual, voice or gesture format.

The digitalization of the Smart Factory is also accompanied by technologies related to 3D printing: a revolution with respect to normal production processes. New areas of application and new treatable materials find space to achieve superior mechanical finishes and strengths.

IMA Smart Factory

IMA has interpreted, according to its own vision, the Smart Factory concepts by introducing them within the Group structure.

To highlight and achieve maximum effectiveness from the epochal change taking place, different areas of development have been created, transversally to all levels of the organization.

In the production area, technologies related to Virtual Commissioning and Digital Twins have been implemented, thanks to which it is possible to improve manufacturing lead time.

Through the Smart Manufacturing, Smart Documentation & Digital Working processes, the methods for accessing technical documentation for the various shareholders have been unified and expanded.

Thanks to the Smart Material Flow a digital system was introduced to optimize warehouse operations and improve the visibility of items during status transitions.

With the Additive Manufacturing and 3D printing new technology is constantly introduced within the plants.

With the Connected Supply Chain project, an integrated system of digital tools was created to standardize the incoming/outgoing communication of estimates, orders and purchases for the entire supply chain.

Virtual Commissioning

In order to achieve increasingly efficient and rapid performance, manufacturers must resort to new industrial design systems that guarantee implementation speed and system reliability.

Using systems design methods that guarantee time saving and cost saving is one of the emerging needs within modern industrial markets.

Among the different options available, virtual commissioning is starting to be one of the most versatile ways to obtain highly functional industrial plants. The system design on a digital platform can become a valid ally in the realization of complex industrial systems thanks to numerous advantages.

The real potential of virtual commissioning lies in recreating a digital model (or digital twin) which, connected to the controller and sensors, allows the system to be digitally reproduced to bring out design errors and improvements to be implemented.

The virtual commissioning advantages are many:

  • problems and system bugs solved directly in the design phase
  • shortened production times
  • parallel activities on the same project
  • processes optimized for each contact person involved

Smart Production

We work to reach the best efficiency in the shop floor management and in the real production environment, integrating digital tools in all the value chain.

In an industrial reality where production is oriented to optimized performance and where it is necessary to manage a complex industrial structure, there is a need to have all the information available and accessible, along with the necessary resources to make the product.

Digital technologies enable the interconnection and cooperation of all the resources employed in the factory and along the value chain, for greater efficiency and competitiveness.

IMA has equipped engineers and operators of digital devices and touch monitors to guarantee real-time access to multimedia documentation and improve collaboration between technicians and departments.

In this sense, the Group has created BuDDy, the first Digital Assistant of its kind, to facilitate the planning of production and assembly activities.

BuDDy is the Assistant for Digital Documentation.

BuDDy (Patent Pending) facilitates information and technical documentation sharing in real time, between people and contacts, certifying information flows and guaranteeing traceability.

BuDDy was created to provide operators of production lines a versatile tool through which they can immediately find documentation, technical data sheets and manuals, without having to physically go to the different technical departments.

BuDDy Digital Assistant:

  • is designed to be used with protective gloves
  • allows sharing and updating of technical documentation in real time, guaranteeing quality, traceability and certifiability
  • is equipped with an integrated battery with an autonomy of 10 hours
  • supports a 55” touchscreen capacitive display
  • is equipped with side handles and 160mm wheels
  • is equipped with a removable drawer for keyboard and mouse
  • is equipped with a front fingerprint reader
  • uses the wifi and bluetooth connection

Explore the potential of BuDDy and increase the performance of your production facility.

Additive Manufacturing

We constantly implement new technologies and skills thanks to Additive Manufacturing.

Additive Manufacturing (or AM), also known as 3D printing, is the set of processes for creating objects starting from digital 3D models, with layer upon layer approach.

IMA has decided to adopt this type of technology, constantly implementing new technical solutions and using innovative processes at all stages of design and production.

The advantages of additive manufacturing are many:

  • the use of the strictly necessary material for the creation of the piece allows the recycling of the excess material (with a reduction in waste, a saving in costs and a lower environmental impact)
  • the versatility of technology allows the creation of an object starting from any CAD project (for greater flexibility and customization).

The AM then opens the way to innovation, by creating new designs or revisiting existing product versions. By introducing the material only where necessary, lighter structures are created with further energy savings to move the components themselves.

Digital Workflow

In a world accelerated by technological innovations, digital tools prove to be excellent allies in the management of flows and processes.

The enabling technologies of Industry 4.0 find fertile ground within industrial companies and more generally in manufacturing. The opportunity to achieve faster workflows and more effective communication makes digital the perfect tool that goes well with today’s needs for reduced time-to-market.

With the goal of encouraging the efficiency of its organization, IMA has adopted a series of projects aimed at making communications more efficient within the departments.

IMA has equipped employees with internal digital platforms and tools aimed at controlling and managing internal and external processes, with regards to the management of warehouse flows, project planning and development of the entire supply chain.

Through this internal digital re-organization we aspire to reach an higher and more improved efficiency in the relationship with the customers.
